EU Regulations

UNDERSTANDING GHS and CLP regulation and Earth Friendly Products

GHS (Global Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) is a system that defines and classifies the hazards of chemical products, and communicates health and safety information on Product labels (for consumers) and Safety Data Sheets (for professional use and transportation).

This system uses standardized hazard statements, signal words and symbols according to the classification of that chemical or mixture. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) have 16 sections in a set order. The objective is that the same set of rules for classifying hazards, and the same format and content for labels and safety data sheets (SDS) will be adopted and used around the world.

In Europe the CLP Regulation (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) aligns the European Union system of classification, labelling and packaging chemical substances and mixtures to the GHS. The CLP regulations must be used in the EU for cleaning products, defined are chemical mixtures, which are produced from June 1, 2015.

This means that from June 1st 2015 Earth Friendly Products will be introducing some new hazard and warning symbols onto its product labels. Note that the GHS/CLP regulations are primarily for regulating dangerous substances that present a serious hazard to humans, animals and the environment, so it might seem incongruous that such symbols would apply to green and plant-based cleaning products that have decades of green chemistry expertise behind them, such as Earth Friendly Products. However, the GHS/CLP system of labelling covers all cleaning products, green or otherwise. It is self-regulatory and as such, even if a product presents only a mild hazard e.g. a plant-based soap will make your eyes irritated if squirted into the eye, this is still considered to represent as hazard under CLP.

LOOK OUT FOR CHANGES TO EFP LABELS FROM 1st JUNE 2015

May cause Eye Irritation

A new symbol/pictogram - a red diamond with a white background and a black exclamation mark will replace the orange square with a black cross on Oxobrite Laundry Stain Remover 907g

A new symbol/pictogram in the shape of a red diamond with a white background and a black exclamation mark will appear on many of the Earth Friendly Products range as the coconut-soap based surfactants used may cause eye irritation if they inadvertently get into the eye so this warning should appear on labels according to the new GHS/CLP criteria. Please note that eye irritation will not occur under normal usage instructions.

Be assured that Earth Friendly Products commitment to safe plant-based products that respect the environment and all its inhabitants is as strong as ever.
